Council members in Hazleton have different views on whether the city should pursue a project that would use money saved from upgrading 1,385 aged street lights to high-efficiency LED units to pay for the work.

While Councilman Jeff Cusat believes the city should move forward with an energy-savings project that is guaranteed to save the city at least $876,419 in electricity and maintenance costs over the next decade, council President Jack Mundie said he still has questions as the governing body continues reviewing the proposal.

The upgrades would help the city offset street lighting energy costs that are projected by PPL to climb by about $25,000 in 2016.
